You might have heard someone describe a piece as being 'modal' or belonging to a particular mode. So, what does this mean?
The modes are a set of scales that are some of the oldest in existence.
In their most basic form, they are the scales that we get when we build scales out of just the white notes on the piano.
Each of these modes has a slightly different flavour and characters and so in the next few videos, we're going to take a look at each one in turn.
